Firlefanz wants to learn chess and travels to the wise Grandmaster Zeno — who teaches him the most beautiful game in the world!
Firlefanz woke up and stretched comfortably. The morning sun shone through the window and painted golden stripes on the bed. Suddenly he had an idea. "I want to learn chess!", he shouted. He had dreamed of a great chess master — the wise Grandmaster Zeno, who lived in a tall white tower and played the most beautiful chess games in the world.
In the kitchen, Firlefanz ate his oatmeal with honey and drank a warm cup of herbal tea. He thoughtfully looked at his little chess set, which he had once found at the market. King, queen, rooks, bishops, knights, and pawns — how did they all play together? Firlefanz was determined to find out.
Firlefanz ran to Papalapapp. He was sitting on the porch, drinking his morning coffee. "Papalapapp! I want to visit the chess grandmaster Zeno and learn chess!" Papalapapp smiled. "He lives in the alabaster tower at the end of the world. Do you want me to come with you?" "Yes, please!", shouted Firlefanz. Papalapapp stood up. "Then let's set off!"
Firlefanz got dressed for the big journey: the green hat, sturdy hiking boots, and a warm jacket. Of course, he also took his walking stick. Papalapapp packed his backpack with provisions — cheese sandwiches, nuts, and a jug of raspberry lemonade. "Ready?", asked Papalapapp. "Ready!", shouted Firlefanz.
And so they set off, Firlefanz and Papalapapp. Over seven seas, where seagulls showed them the way. Over seven deserts, where the sand sparkled golden. Over seven tall mountains, seven rivers, and through seven dense forests. Sometimes they rode on friendly clouds, sometimes birds sang songs to make the journey shorter.
After seven days, they arrived in the realm of magical chess. Here, the trees looked like giant chess pieces made of white and black wood. The paths were patterned in black and white like a chessboard, wherever one looked. Little colorful birds hopped from square to square. "How beautiful!", whispered Firlefanz and happily hopped after them.
At the end of the chessboard path, a tall white tower rose into the blue sky. On the balcony sat an old, friendly man with a long white beard. "Welcome, young Firlefanz! And welcome, dear Papalapapp!", he cheerfully called. "I am Grandmaster Zeno. I have been waiting for you. Come up!"
Zeno led them into a cozy room full of chessboards and books. He sat down with Firlefanz and patiently explained all the pieces. "The king can only move one step at a time, but he is the most important. The queen can move far, wherever she wants. The knight jumps in an L — like this!" Firlefanz listened with big, shining eyes.
Then they played their first game. Firlefanz thought long and hard before moving a piece. He looked at the whole board — left, right, forward, backward. Grandmaster Zeno smiled warmly and praised every clever move. "Very good! You think like a real chess player!" Papalapapp watched and nodded proudly. In the end, they shook hands heartily.
At dinner, they ate chessboard cookies that looked like tiny black and white squares. Zeno shared his favorite wisdom. "Chess is like a journey, Firlefanz. You plan ahead, are patient, and in the end, you always find a way." Firlefanz nodded and laughed. "Just like a real journey!" They ate cookies and talked until the stars came out.
When it was time to go, Zeno took out a small, beautiful chess set made of colorful wood. "This now belongs to you. Practice a little every day." Firlefanz hugged the old master tightly. "Can I come back to visit you one day?" Zeno beamed. "I always look forward to your visits. The door is always open."
On the way home, Firlefanz and Papalapapp walked quietly and happily, over seven plains, seven forests, seven rivers, seven mountains, seven deserts, and seven seas. When Firlefanz lay in his warm bed, he gently held the little chess set in his hands. He closed his eyes and dreamed of clever moves, patient games, and the friendly Grandmaster Zeno.
