A colorful rocket suddenly stands in Firlefanz's garden — and is waiting to fly to the planets of the solar system!
When Firlefanz woke up that morning, he rubbed his eyes in wonder. In the middle of his garden stood a large, colorful rocket. It shimmered in all the colors of the rainbow — red, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Firlefanz pressed his nose against the window. Was it really there? Yes — the rocket was real!
At breakfast, Firlefanz ate his bread with strawberry jam and drank his rose hip tea. He kept looking out the window the whole time. The rocket shone beautifully in the morning sun. "With such a rocket," thought Firlefanz, "maybe we could fly to the planets."
Firlefanz quickly ran to Papalapapp. He was sitting on the porch, drinking his morning coffee. "Papalapapp! There is a colorful rocket in my garden! I want to fly to all eight planets!" Papalapapp put down his cup and smiled. "That's a wonderful idea. Can I come along?" "Of course!" shouted Firlefanz.
Together they got dressed. Firlefanz got a silver spacesuit, a round helmet, and bright red space boots. Papalapapp chose a golden spacesuit with a particularly cozy helmet that had extra room for his ears. Then they climbed into the colorful rocket together.
With a big WHOOSH, the rocket shot into the sky. They flew over seven seas of clouds, through seven star nebulae, past seven comets, through seven meteor showers, over seven Milky Ways, through seven galaxies, and over seven shining solar winds. Finally, the first planets appeared before them.
First came Mercury and Venus. Mercury was a small, stone-gray planet, and Venus was wrapped in thick, orange clouds. "It's way too hot for us here," said Papalapapp. The rocket's instruments beeped in agreement. So they waved goodbye to the hot planets and flew on.
Then came Mars — glowing red like a giant strawberry. When Firlefanz looked out the window, a small figure waved up at them. It was Pünktchen, a Martian child with three eyes and four arms. Pünktchen showed them red rocks and sand whirlwinds. They collected Mars stones and became best friends right away. "Come back soon!" shouted Pünktchen at farewell.
Jupiter was enormous, with a huge red storm on its surface. Suddenly, a friendly cloud fish swam towards them. "My name is Wolki!" he called cheerfully. "This storm always tickles me so nicely!" Firlefanz and Papalapapp laughed heartily. Wolki swam around the rocket and waved.
Saturn was the most beautiful planet of all. Its golden rings sparkled like a thousand diamonds in the sunlight. A little ring creature named Funki danced around the rocket. "The rings are made of ice and dust!" Funki explained proudly. "I surf here every day!" Firlefanz stared in awe with his mouth open. He waved goodbye to Funki for a long time as the rocket flew on.
Then came Uranus, in soft blue-green, and deep blue Neptune. There waited the old Wellus — a wise Neptunian with a beard made of seaweed. "Welcome to the edge of the solar system," he said softly. "Here it is quiet and vast. Look how the stars shine from here — each one a little light of its own." Firlefanz looked out into the deep, quiet darkness. It was beautiful.
Finally, it was time to go home. Firlefanz and Papalapapp said goodbye to Pünktchen, Wolki, Funki, and the old Wellus. "Visit us again soon!" they all called together, and their voices sounded like music in space. The colorful rocket turned around and began the long journey back to Earth.
The rocket landed gently in the garden as the sun was low on the horizon. Firlefanz and Papalapapp got out and looked up at the evening sky. Up there, the stars were shining — and maybe their new friends too. Firlefanz yawned, leaned against Papalapapp, and whispered: "That was the most beautiful journey in the world." Then he peacefully fell asleep.
